These spooky witch finger pretzel rods are a quick and easy Halloween treat that looks unbelievably realistic. Made with just a few simple ingredients, they’re perfect for parties and guaranteed to get a reaction.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 standard bag pretzel rods (about 30 rods)
  • 12 ounces (340 grams) green candy melts
  • About 30 slivered almonds (natural, untoasted)
  • 1 tube red decorating gel
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable shortening (optional, for thinning candy melts)

Instructions

  1. Set up your work station. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Have your pretzel rods, slivered almonds, and red decorating gel within arm’s reach.
  2. Melt the green candy melts. Pour the candy melts into a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 30-second intervals at 50% power, stirring between each interval. This usually takes about 2 to 3 minutes total. The coating should be smooth and fully melted with no lumps. If it’s too thick for dipping, stir in 1 teaspoon of vegetable shortening.
  3. Prepare the almond fingernails. While the coating is melting, sort through your slivered almonds and pick out the ones that look most like fingernails. You want pieces that are wide at one end and tapered at the other. Set them aside on a small plate.
  4. Dip the pretzel rods. Hold a pretzel rod by one end and dip the other two-thirds into the melted green coating. Let the excess drip off back into the bowl. You want a thin, even layer. Use your offset spatula or butter knife to smooth out any lumps or drips.
  5. Place the fingernail. Immediately after dipping, press a slivered almond onto the tip of the pretzel rod. The pointed end of the almond should face outward, like a fingernail. Press gently but firmly so it sticks.
  6. Add the ‘blood’ detail. Using the red decorating gel, squeeze a small dot at the base of the almond fingernail. This creates the illusion of a cuticle or a little bit of gore.
  7. Set the pretzels. Place the finished pretzel rod on the parchment-lined baking sheet. Repeat with the remaining pretzels, leaving a little space between each one so they don’t stick together. Once all pretzels are dipped and decorated, transfer the baking sheet to the refrigerator and chill for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the coating is completely firm.
  8. Serve and enjoy. Once set, arrange the witch finger pretzel rods on a platter.

Notes

Don’t overheat the candy melts; microwave at 50% power in 30-second intervals. Work in small batches to keep the coating from setting. Sort almonds before starting. Use tweezers for precise placement. Let pretzels set completely in the fridge for 10-15 minutes. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. Do not refrigerate after setting to avoid condensation. These taste even better the next day.
