Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large seedless watermelon (1012 pounds)
  • 1/2 cup fresh lime juice (about 45 limes)
  • 1 cup orange juice (fresh or store-bought)
  • 4 cups club soda or sparkling water (plain or lime-flavored)
  • 1/4 cup grenadine syrup
  • 1/4 cup simple syrup (optional)
  • Ice cubes (plenty)
  • Black icing or melted chocolate (for spiderweb decoration)
  • Gummy spiders or Halloween candy (for garnish)
  • Mint leaves (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Watermelon Bowl (10-15 minutes): Slice off a thin layer from the bottom of the watermelon so it sits flat. Slice off the top third horizontally to create a lid. Use a serrated knife to carefully cut around the edges without piercing the bottom.
  2. Hollow Out the Watermelon: Use a large spoon or ice cream scoop to remove the flesh. Set the flesh aside in a large bowl for the punch.
  3. Make Watermelon Balls (Optional): Use a melon baller to create watermelon spheres for garnish.
  4. Mix the Punch (10 minutes): In a large mixing bowl, combine the watermelon flesh, fresh lime juice, orange juice, grenadine syrup, and simple syrup if using. Stir well and adjust sweetness if needed.
  5. Chill and Add Fizz: Add ice cubes to the punch mixture, then gently stir in the club soda or sparkling water just before serving.
  6. Transfer to Watermelon Bowl: Carefully pour the punch mixture into the hollowed watermelon shell.
  7. Create the Spiderweb Design: Using black icing or melted chocolate in a piping bag, draw concentric circles on the punch surface. Drag lines from the center outward with a toothpick to form a spiderweb pattern.
  8. Add Gummy Spiders and Garnish: Place gummy spiders around the web and add mint leaves for color.
  9. Serve: Use a ladle to scoop punch into glasses, including watermelon balls.

Notes

Add sparkling water last minute to keep fizz fresh. Hollow the watermelon slowly to avoid cracks or leaks. Practice spiderweb design on parchment paper if nervous. Add ice gradually to prevent watering down the punch. For an adult version, add 1-2 cups of light rum or vodka. Store leftovers in airtight container up to 2 days; fizz will decrease over time.
