This creamy, spicy, and cheesy buffalo chicken dip is baked inside a crusty sourdough bread bowl, making it the ultimate shareable appetizer for game day or any gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups cooked chicken, shredded
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup buffalo hot sauce
  • 1 packet ranch seasoning mix
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup chopped green onions
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 large round sourdough bread loaf (910 inches in diameter)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • Optional: 1/2 cup shredded cheddar or mozzarella for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Soften cream cheese if not already done.
  2. Cut a circle about 2 inches from the edge of the top of the bread loaf at a slight angle to create a lid. Remove lid and set aside. Gently pull out soft bread inside, leaving a 1-inch thick wall. Tear removed bread into bite-sized chunks and set aside on a baking sheet. Brush inside of hollowed bread bowl with melted butter.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine softened cream cheese, sour cream, buffalo hot sauce, and ranch seasoning mix. Stir until smooth. Add shredded chicken, 1 cup cheddar, 1 cup mozzarella, and green onions. Mix until evenly coated. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
  4. Spoon the dip into the hollowed bread bowl, leaving about 1/2 inch of space at the top. Sprinkle extra cheese on top if desired. Place lid on or leave off for a golden top.
  5. Place filled bread bowl on a baking sheet. Bake for 20-25 minutes, until dip is hot and bubbly and cheese is melted and golden. If top browns too quickly, tent with foil for last 10 minutes. During baking, toast reserved bread chunks on the same sheet for 5-7 minutes until golden.
  6. Let bread bowl rest for 5 minutes. Garnish with extra green onions and ranch dressing if desired. Serve immediately with toasted bread chunks, crackers, or vegetable sticks.

Notes

Don’t skip brushing the bread bowl with butter to prevent sogginess. Shred your own cheese for best melt. Toast the removed bread chunks for dipping. For a less spicy version, reduce buffalo sauce to 1/4 cup and add extra ranch seasoning.
