A warm-toned, cozy Halloween punch made with blood oranges, cinnamon, and ginger ale. This easy, non-alcoholic drink is perfect for a quiet night in or a small gathering, with a deep red color and a comforting, spiced flavor.

Ingredients

  • Blood oranges, juiced (about 4-5 medium oranges, yields ~1 cup)
  • Water (2 cups)
  • Granulated sugar (1/2 cup, or to taste)
  • Cinnamon sticks (2-3 whole sticks)
  • Fresh rosemary sprigs (2-3 sprigs)
  • Ginger ale (4 cups, chilled)
  • Ice cubes (as needed)
  • Optional: Pomegranate seeds (1/4 cup)

Instructions

  1. Juice the blood oranges: Roll each blood orange on the counter to loosen the juices, cut them in half, and juice them using a reamer or citrus press. You should end up with about 1 cup of fresh juice. Set aside.
  2. Start the spiced base: In a medium saucepan, combine the blood orange juice, water, and sugar. Add the cinnamon sticks and rosemary sprigs. Place over medium heat and bring to a gentle simmer (small bubbles around the edges, not a hard boil). Let simmer for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Strain and cool: Remove the saucepan from heat. Strain the liquid through a fine-mesh strainer into a heatproof bowl or pitcher. Discard the cinnamon sticks and rosemary sprigs. Let the spiced mixture cool for about 10 minutes at room temperature.
  4. Chill the base (optional but recommended): Refrigerate the strained mixture for 15-20 minutes to chill completely. This helps keep the punch cold and fizzy longer when you add the ginger ale.
  5. Assemble the punch: Fill a pitcher or punch bowl with ice cubes. Pour the chilled (or warm) spiced blood orange mixture over the ice. Slowly pour in the chilled ginger ale down the side of the pitcher to preserve carbonation. Stir gently to combine. If using pomegranate seeds, sprinkle them in now.
  6. Garnish and serve: Float thin slices of blood orange on top and add a fresh rosemary sprig to each glass if desired. Serve immediately in glasses filled with ice. Best enjoyed within an hour of adding the ginger ale.

Notes

For a warm version, skip the ginger ale and ice, and serve the spiced base warm in mugs with a splash of apple cider. For an adult version, add 1/2 cup of vodka, bourbon, or dark rum before adding the ginger ale. The spiced base can be made up to 3 days ahead and stored in the refrigerator. Add ginger ale fresh before serving for best fizz. If you can’t find blood oranges, substitute with a mix of regular orange juice and cranberry juice.
